HEALTH UPDATE: Prevent Mpox Transmission in Summer 2023
Monkeypox, or mpox, is a disease that causes a rash and spreads through close contact in some communities. If you are experiencing symptoms you think may be related to mpox, please call your doctor for an evaluation, or call (408) 792-3720 to make an appointment at the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinic. If you are experiencing COVID symptoms or have been told to isolate or quarantine, please refrain from utilizing in person services until you are symptom free for 24 hours and have completed your isolation and quarantine period.
Whether your test is positive or negative, get the sexual health services you need
The Crane Center offers free HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis testing, low-cost tests for other STIs, counseling, treatment, doxycycline for STI prevention or DoxyPEP, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV prevention. An STI is described as any condition passed through sexual contact, also known as a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Explore below to learn more.

*Clinic will open for registration 30 minutes prior to posted times and will close to drop-in patients once maximum clinic volume has been reached each day. Therefore, we may close before posted times. To increase the likelihood that you will be seen, please arrive early. Please be aware that wait times may vary.

It is a pleasure to announce that California Department of Public Health, Office of AIDS (CDPH-OA) is expanding their OraQuick HIV self-test kits to all counties in California on January 23, 2023, through the Building Healthy Online Communities: Take Me Home program (BHOC-TMH). You can order up to 2 free HIV self-tests every 90 days via a new online portal. Tests are available to anyone 17 years or older, regardless of health insurance or immigration status.

- HIV PrEP/PEP counseling and navigation services
- Support to start PrEP
- Linkage to a primary care provider, as needed
- Assistance in accessing programs that help cover the cost of medication partially or in full
- Referrals for immunizations, STI prevention and other services, as needed

The Positive Connections Program provides comprehensive case planning and coordination for those individuals who have been newly diagnosed with HIV, or are not currently in care in Santa Clara County. Our goal is to promote better health outcomes by ensuring access to healthcare and supportive services.
We work together with community-based organizations and individuals to provide high quality care that is culturally and linguistically appropriate.
Some of the services we offer are:
- Access to primary health care
- Linkages to benefits counseling, mental health, food and housing assistance, drug and alcohol treatment, emergency financial assistance, dental care, legal services, and case management
- Vida y Salud, a support group for Spanish speaking clients
- Patient advocacy
- Partner counseling and referral through Partner Services

The Public Health Department offers Partner Services. Partner Services is a program designed to notify individuals of potential exposure to HIV or an STI. As a notified partner, individuals can choose to get tested and can receive counseling about practicing safer behaviors to avoid future exposure to HIV and STIs.
If you are found to be infected with an STI or with HIV, we can help connect you to early medical treatment and provide education on behaviors that help prevent transmission of HIV and STIs to others.

- Obtain materials on how to notify your partners
- Schedule a dual notification with a trained Public Health HIV/STI counselor to help you notify your partner
- Request a trained Public Health HIV/STI counselor to notify your partner anonymously

Why should I get tested for STIs?
- The most common STI symptom is no symptom at all, so the only way to know your status is to get tested.
- Many STIs like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis are treatable and able to be cured, but if left untreated, these infections can cause serious health problems.
- Young people in Santa Clara County and nationwide are affected by STIs surprisingly more than you would expect.
The good news is that getting tested for STIs is one of the most important things you could do for your health, and our process is fast and easy at the Crane Center.
